STUDENT
LIFE AT TGS
Where will students stay? The students will stay at
Bruce Hall a dormitory at the University of North Texas (UNT). All meals
will be provided through the governor's school. Most classes and
extracurricular activities will be held nearby. Male and female
participants will be assigned to separate floors and will share a room
with another participant. Student Life Staff will make room assignments,
and Resident Assistants will reside on each floor.
What will the ratio of students to adults at
TGS? There will be approximately 16 resident assistants (RA's) who
will live in the dorm with the students. They will assist students getting
to class, moving around campus, and provide guidance. Many of our RA's
have previous experience in similar positions at the Texas Academy of
Mathematics and Science (TAMS) - an early college entry program at UNT.
All RA's and instructors will have up-to-date criminal background
checks.
Will my son or daughter be separated from University of North
Texas students? Bruce Hall will only house TGS students and
RA's; UNT will be in summer session during TGS, but governor's school
participants will have activities separate from summer school
students.
Will there be a curfew? Yes, students will be
required to be in their rooms at 11:30pm each night. RA's will conduct bed
checks.
How will students move around Denton? Students are
taken throughout Denton in university vans or a school bus.
Vans are driven certified drivers that are staff memebers. The
school buses are driven by Denton ISD bus drivers.
Are there laundry facilities available? There are
coin operated laundry facilities in the dormitory for you to use. Laundry
supplies are not sold in Bruce Hall but a shopping trip to the store will
be scheduled if these items need to be purchased.
What items are not permitted at the Governor's
School? Computers, video games, televisions, refrigerators,
electric fans, electric heaters, hot plates or other food-warming
appliances, fireworks, explosives, cigarettes or smoking materials,
tobacco products, butane lighters, halogen lamps, quartz light
bulbs/lamps, candles, incense, fluid lamps/lanterns, skates (of any kind),
skateboards, scooters (of any kind), bicycles, weapons (of any kind), toys
that look like weapons, walkie-talkies, video cameras, and handcuffs (or
anything like that!). Anything illegal to you as a minor or otherwise is
strictly forbidden including alcohol and illegal drugs.
May I bring my car to TGS? No. Student participants
of TGS are not allowed personal vehicles on the UNT campus for the 3-week
session.
Can I attend religious services during the Governor's
School? Staff members will arrange transportation to local
churches on Sunday mornings.
Can I see my child while they are at TGS? Yes you
can, on Sundays from 8:00am to 12:45pm.
What time is check out on Saturday, June
25th? Students may begin checking out at 9:00 a.m. and must be
out of Bruce Hall no later than 12 noon on June 25th.

ACADEMICS AT
TGS
What courses are offered at the TGS? Students will
take courses focused on science and technology such as biological,
medical, chemical and physical sciences; technological and engineering
sciences as well as ethics, arts, and history as related to science and
technology. Courses on Preparing for College and Developing
Writing Skills will also be required.
Are the courses for high school or college
credit? No, courses will not have grades and will not be for
credit. Only TGS students will attend these classes.
Who will teach the courses? A two person team of a
university faculty and a
secondary school teacher will teach each class.
Will there be extracurricular activities? Yes,
there will be many nonacademic activities, including musical performances
and group competitions.
In addition, there will be informal social gatherings (milk and
cookies) each evening and three more organized social functions.
What are the key dates? The application postmark
deadline is March 12, 2011.
Acceptances will be mailed shortly after.
