HOMEWORK 8
BIOL/CHEM 5310
due Tuesday, November 12, 2002
1. VVP , Chapter 8, page 218, problems 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 (Show your work)
Note: Homework problem 7 from Chapter 8 might seem a little vague as written:
"How many different disaccharides of D-glucopyranose are possible?"
You should assume that all linkages between the glucose molecules
involve at least one Carbon-1, i.e. an anomeric carbon. Also assume
that both alpha and beta anomers are available to form the dimers.
You should try to name all 19.
For example: alpha (1->2) beta
2. Draw the chemical structures in Fischer projection of D-Mannose, D-galactose, and D-allose, and draw the Haworth projections of the a-D-pyranose forms.
