BIOL/CHEM 5310
due Tuesday, November 19, 2002

Show your work.

1. VVP, Chapter 9, page 238, problems 1, 4, 6, 10

2. VVP, Chapter 10, page 277, problems 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 (8a should read K+ ions, mistake in 1st ed.) , 9, 12.

3. Benjamin Franklin poured 1 teaspoon of oil onto the surface of Clapham Pond and concluded that it covered the entire surface, by observing its calming effect. How thick would the oil be, if evenly distributed over the 1 acre pond? ( 1 acre = 4047 m2 and 1 teaspoon = 5 ml) Is the oil more likely to be a monolayer or a bilayer? Explain.

4. Consider a peripheral membrane protein from the human erythrocyte. If this protein had a large number of Lysine residues, which side of the membrane would you predict it to be bound to? (inside or outside). Look at Figure 10-17, and explain your answer, by considering charge.

5. Look at Fig. 10-36 on p. 271. Using the following ions (sodium, postassium or chloride), give examples of the translocation systems listed below
a) uniport of a cation
b) electroneutral symport
c) electroneutral antiport
