PCNA bound to Pol η fragment

This PIP box is shown in orange, the hydrophobic pocket that binds the PIP boxes is shown in white. For reference on the back of the protein, the Lys-164 that can be ubiquitinated is shown in black.

Zoomed in view of the hydrophobic pocket and the Polymerase η interaction. Notice that the Met-701 interacts with the hydrophobic pocket of PCNA, which has never been seen in PIP box interactions before. This residue has been shown to be important in modulating binding affinity of Pol η to PCNA, so that it avoids competition with the less error-prone DNA polymerases.
