The Bridge Breast Cancer

(Jenise Hughes, Enrico Linscheer, Matt Maynard, Carrie Messer, 2000)

The Bridge has a professional staff of two; Mary Morris, CAE, executive director and Amy Hackney, LSW, client services coordinator. Carol Tomasz is the part time administrative assistant. Volunteers are medical professionals such as anesthesiologists, radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons and nurses. Other volunteers are board and committee members, and professionals donating specific services.

Since 1992, the Bridge has served 1,800 women; one hundred sixty-five had breast cancer.

Bridge Breast Center offers diagnostic and treatment services for under-insured or uninsured women with breast cancer. The Bridge offers services to women through a medical network of volunteer physicians and low cost contracts with health care facilities. Women reach the Bridge in a variety of ways: referrals from the medical community, community health agencies (Planned Parenthood, American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and affiliates), civic organizations, and themselves.

The Bridge arranges for each phase of treatment as required by the physicians. The client services coordinator maintains the medical records and forwards them to each provider. In addition, she works with the client to be sure the medical plan is followed. The Bridge also qualifies clients for indigent drug programs. And, we accept clients at any point in their treatment.
