Homework Assignment #2
(assignments due one week after received)
1. A semiconductor laser has a (free space or vacuum) emission wavelength of 1.55 µm. The (effective) index of the semiconductor material is 3.3. What is the frequency, wavelength, and velocity of the optical wave--both inside the laser and in free space?
2. In problem 1, what is the energy of the photons--both inside the laser and in free space?
3. Problem 1.2 (text).
4. Problem 1.4 (text). Redo this problem if the input power is3 mW and the system loss is 75 dB.
5. Problem 1.6 (text). Redo this problem for the coax line described in Fig. 1-18 of the text assuming a carrier frequency of 10 MHz.
6. Problem 1.7 (text)
7. Problem 1.13 (text)
8. Problem 1.14 (text)
9. Problem 1.16 (text)
10. Problem 1.17 (text)
11. The attached data sheet for an Optical Multimeter indicates that optical power can be measured from -20 dBm to 30 dBm. What does that power range correspond to in milliwatts or watts?
Note: the problems above are all pretty short--with the possible exception of the text problem 1.17, which I will go over in class (after the homework is due). If you are stuck, and you do not have a classmate that can help you out, contact me by email, phone, or fax. (Do not spend hours trying to figure out how to get started on any of these problems.)
