Dr. Larson’s research explores the interdisciplinary relationship of machine learning and signal/image processing with the fields of security, mobile health, education, psycho-visual psychology, human-computer interaction, and ubiquitous computing. He has a passion for teaching and mentoring, and views research as an ideal opportunity to instruct the next generation of computer scientists and engineers. Dr. Larson has a unique role, supporting cyber security, education, healthcare, and sustainability applications via the integration of machine learning and ubiquitous sensing. He has become increasingly interested in sensing markers of health and context awareness using commonplace sensors. His research supports many healthcare, educational, and security initiatives by creating applications that (1) manage and diagnose many chronic/infectious ailments, (2) help learners master educational topics, and (3) investigate information leakage in pervasive and mobile devices.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://s2.smu.edu/~mitch/DDI/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/HMI-Lab-pic.jpg” alt=”Hmi Lab Pic” title_text=”Hmi Lab Pic” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” box_shadow_style=”preset2″ global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://s2.smu.edu/~mitch/DDI/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/partner-labs-2.jpg” alt=”Partner Labs 2″ title_text=”Partner Labs 2″ align=”center” admin_label=”Image” _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” box_shadow_style=”preset2″ global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Dr. Duncan MacFarlane leads the Photonic Devices and Systems Laboratory (PDSL), with emphasis on experimental studies in quantum informatics. Specific areas of investigation include design and analysis of quantum photonics integrated circuits, quantum informatics design tools, and applications at the intersection of quantum informatics and cyber security.
