CS 5/7312 (Spring, 2024): Homework #2

Prof. Jeff Tian (tian@smu.edu)

Part 1: Discussion Questions

  1. True or false? Every theory can be presented by its (mathematical) equations. Briefly justify yourself.
  2. In discussing the history/development of I.S. (interaction styles), we started with CLI. Pick another I.S., and try to identify its advantage over CLI in terms of their impact on usability.
  3. Consider the UI/UX (modified/enhanced UID) process we discussed in class, where (in which phase) can user survey and ethnographic observations be used? How?

Part 2: UI Design and Evaluation

You may choose to work with the system you selected for hw#1 before, or pick a different system. Now perform the following for this system:

  1. Classify the I.S.(s) of its user interface. In case multiple I.S.s are used, which one is the primary I.S.?
  2. Pick your evaluation techniques to evaluate its usability. Try to give as much details as you can (e.g., a detailed usability testing or expert review plan)
  3. Suppose you have the evaluation results, how can you updating the systems or developing a replacement for the system based on these results, Pick you development framework (UCD, PD, etc.) adapt our UI/UX process, and describe their use in such redesign activities.

Due Date:

2/14/23.
