CS 5/7312 (Fall, 2024): Homework #2

Prof. Jeff Tian (tian@smu.edu)

Part 1: Discussion Questions

  1. One of the fundamental principles we discussed in our class and in our DTUI book is "know thy users/usages". How would you do this? Namely, how do you get to know them? In which stage of the UI/UX process, and through what activities/techniques?
  2. True or false? EO (ethnographic observations) can be use for UI requirements gathering and analysis as well as for UI design. Briefly justify yourself.
  3. Discuss the similarities and differences between functional prototypes and UI prototypes. If you are not familiar with the former, you might need to do some study on your own to learn about them.

Part 2: UI Design and Evaluation

You may choose to work with the system you selected for hw#1 before, or pick a different system. Now perform the following for this system:

  1. Classify the I.S.(s) of its user interface. In case multiple I.S.s are used, which one is the primary I.S.?
  2. Discuss other possible choices I.S.(s), and how such different choices may affect UX nd system usability.
  3. Pick your evaluation techniques to evaluate its usability. Try to give as much details as you can (e.g., a detailed usability testing or expert review plan, together with an observation/data form of your design/choice.)

Due Date:

3/3/25.
