CS 5/7312 (Fall 2024): Homework #3

Prof. Jeff Tian (tian@smu.edu)

Part 1: Discussion Questions

  1. Discuss the similarities and differences between early DM systems (such as a GUI with 2d icons and actions carried out using mice and/or other selection devices) and an immersive VR system (if you don't know one, try to learn about one of your choice by reading/learning about it). Pay attention to how the DM principles apply to these systems/UIs.
  2. We have discussed contents organization (C.O.) in Menus and Forms. Discuss C.O. in DM, and compare it to that in Menus and Forms.

Part 2: UI Design and Evaluation

You may choose to work with the system you selected for hw#1 or hw#2 before, or pick a different system. Now perform the following for this system:

  1. If your system contains DM element, map the UI/design decision to the DM principles; if not, redesign it into an UI based on DM by following the DM principles.
  2. Can AR be added to your system/UI? If so, how? If not, why not?
  3. Pick your evaluation techniques to evaluate its usability. Try to give as much details as you can (e.g., a detailed usability testing or expert review plan, together with an observation/data form of your design/choice.)

Due Date:

4/10/25.
