CS 5/7312 (Sprng, 2026): Homework #2

Prof. Jeff Tian (tian@smu.edu)

Part 1: Discussion Questions

  1. One of the fundamental principles we discussed in our class and in our DTUI book is "know thy users". How is it different than knowing user-oriented tasks we used in the definition of usability? Try to compare and contrast the similarilies and different on how to obtain/organize/present such information about users and their tasks.
  2. Can you match different design frameworks (UCD, PD, etc.) with different evaluation techniques (ER, UT, etc.)? For example, how would you do UCD-ER, UCD-UT, PD-ER, PD-UT, etc.?

Part 2: UI Design and Evaluation

You may choose to work with the system you selected for hw#1 before, or pick a different system. Now perform the following for this system:

  1. Classify the I.S.(s) of its user interface. In case multiple I.S.s are used, which one is the primary I.S., which one is secondary, etc.?
  2. Discuss other possible choices I.S.(s), and how such different choices may affect UX nd system usability.
  3. Pick your evaluation techniques to evaluate its usability. Try to give as much details as you can (e.g., a detailed usability testing or expert review plan, together with an observation/data form of your design/choice.)

Due Date:

3/2/26.
