CS 5/7312 (Spring, 2026): Homework #3

Prof. Jeff Tian (tian@smu.edu)

Part 1: Discussion Questions

  1. Pick two variations of the DM systems, and discuss their similarities and differences. Pay particular attention to how the DM principles apply to these systems/UIs (similarly, or differently).
  2. Discuss the claim that "once you organize contents into a hierarchical structure, you have a menu in effect". Is it true or false? Try to briefly justify yourself.

Part 2: UI Design and Evaluation

You may choose to work with the system you selected for hw#1 or hw#2 before, or pick a different system. Now perform the following for this system:

  1. If your system contains DM element, map the UI/design decision to the DM principles; if not, redesign it into an UI based on DM by following the DM principles.
  2. Can AR be added to your system/UI? If so, how? If not, why not?
  3. Pick your evaluation techniques to evaluate its usability. Try to give as much details as you can (e.g., a detailed usability testing or expert review plan, together with an observation/data form of your design/choice.)

Due Date:

4/13/26.
