CSE 8340 (Spring 2014): Homework Assignments
Assignment #1: Literature Research
Use the online
resources for software engineering/quality literature
and the class syllabus as your guide,
search some journals/magazines/proceedings to find
some articles on empirical software engineering (ESE),
and do the following:
-
Browse through at least 3 recent
(no more than 10 years old under most circumstances,
and typically within the last 5 years)
periodical/proceeding issues
where some of the relevant papers in the subject area appear.
-
The papers must be published in some periodicals/proceedings,
not working drafts or internal reports.
-
List related papers for each issue
by the following three topic areas:
- risk identification in ESE,
- hypothesis testing in ESE,
- data issues and other ESE topics.
-
Indicate the total number of papers in each issue,
and the general topic areas.
-
If you prefer online sources, you are welcome to do so.
But you need to include the same information,
not just a list of online search results of individual papers.
-
Choose your individual study presentation paper,
and indicate your preliminary choice of course project.
Due Date for hw#1
- In-class students: 2/3/14.
- Distance students: 2/5/14.
Assignment #2 and #3: Paper Summary/Analysis/Critique
For each of the assignment,
select one paper about one of the three ESE areas listed above
from your homework #1
and write a short summary, analysis and critique of the
research findings presented in the article.
You summary/analysis/critique should be around 3 or 4
double-spaced pages of text.
Pay special attention to its relevance to CSE 8340.
Some specifics about these assignments are listed below:
-
The summary should be your own summary, based on your understanding of the
paper, not the authors' summary.
-
An analysis of the reported work,
using the analysis technique we discussed at the beginning of
the semester (ESE fundamentals, Kitchenham et al paper, etc.).
-
The critique is an important part of your essay,
which may include, among other things,
your subjective assessment of the paper and the
practical impact of the reported work.
It is desirable if you can make it relevant to what you are doing at work.
Due Date for hw#2
- In-class students: 2/17/14.
- Distance students: 2/19/14.
Due Date for hw#3
- In-class students: 3/17/14.
- Distance students: 3/19/14.
Individual Study Presentation
Notice: You may choose either of the above papers for hw#2 and hw#3
as the paper for your individual study presentation.
