An Interactive Jmol Tutorial about Cytochrome P450:

James McCormick. 2014

Chemical Action
Cytochrome P450 is a large group of enzymes that oxidize a wide range of substrates. The most common reaction catalyzed is the addition of an oxygen atom to the aliphatic position of an organic ligand, reducing the other oxygen atom to water. The characteristic feature of cytochrome P450s is the presence of a heme co-factor. These enzymes are critical for drug metabolism and clearing, they are found in all forms of life. They are an important factor for consideration when designing, testing, and administering therapeutics.
