EGFR Activation by EGF
Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR/ErbB1)

In the absence of ligand EGFR dimerization is self-inhibited by burring the dimerization arm between the two cysteine rich subdomains CS1 (green) and CS2 (red). Ferguson 2003 (1NQL)

Ligand binding is mediated primarily by the L1 domain and exposes the dimerization arm. Ogiso 2002 (1IVO)

The EGF activated receptors can now dimerize and interact through intermolecular disulfide bonds shown in gray.
