The non-canonical PIP box for Pol I is KGLIDYYL. This PIP box is
shown in green, the hydrophobic pocket that binds the PIP boxes
is shown in white. For reference on the back of the protein, the
Lys-164 that can be ubiquitinated is shown in black. Notice the
shape similarity between the PIP box and its binding pocket.

in view of the hydrophobic pocket and the Polymerase I
interaction. Hydrogen bonds have been calculated and show that
there are much fewer than in the other PIP boxes, but there are
several intramolecular H-bonds. Notice that Lys-421 of Pol Ι is
not H-bonded, as expected by the canonical PIP box interactions.
The shape similarity is also similar between the two surfaces. |
