PCNA bound to Pol I fragment

The non-canonical PIP box for Pol I is KGLIDYYL. This PIP box is shown in green, the hydrophobic pocket that binds the PIP boxes is shown in white. For reference on the back of the protein, the Lys-164 that can be ubiquitinated is shown in black. Notice the shape similarity between the PIP box and its binding pocket.

Zoomed in view of the hydrophobic pocket and the Polymerase I interaction. Hydrogen bonds have been calculated and show that there are much fewer than in the other PIP boxes, but there are several intramolecular H-bonds. Notice that Lys-421 of Pol Ι is not H-bonded, as expected by the canonical PIP box interactions. The shape similarity is also similar between the two surfaces.
