Cincinnati 62 82 15.5 0.431 18 * * Elim 17

Cincinnati could finish the season with as many as 80 wins. If none of the other four teams in the division finish the season with more than 80 wins, Cincinnati could finish in first place. For that to happen, Chicago would have to win at most three more games, and St. Louis and Milwaukee would each have to win at most five more games. To have even a chance to finish in first place, Cincinnati needs Chicago, St. Louis, and Milwaukee to collectively win at most 13 more games. As shown in the table below, however, those three teams will collectively win at least 14 more games.

Remaining Series in the NL Central
Chicago vs. Milwaukee 4 Games Left
Chicago vs. St. Louis 7 Games Left
Milwaukee vs. St. Louis 3 Games Left

No matter how the series listed above play out, at least one of the three teams will finish the season with at least 81 wins. For example, suppose Chicago wins three of the games in their series with Milwaukee. That would leave 11 wins to be distributed between Milwaukee and St. Louis, which means one of those teams would win at least five more games for a final win total of at least 81. Since the first place team in the division will have at least 81 wins, Cincinnati is eliminated from first place despite having enough games left to catch up with Chicago.
