Charles Aguillon, Director

Charles Aguillon began his tenure as the 12th Director of the Mustang Band on July 1, 2022. In addition to directing the university's athletic bands, he is responsible for the cheer, pom, and Peruna handlers programs. An educator for 30 years, he most recently served as Director of Fine Arts and Academic Enrichment for the Lake Travis Independent School District in Austin, Texas. His previous positions as a band director and administrator were in the Georgetown (TX) and San Marcos (TX) school districts.

Mr. Aguillon is a graduate of Texas Stae University-San Marcos where he received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music Education. While at Texas State, he was Drum Major of the Bobcat Marching Band and Assistant Conductor of the Wind Ensemble. Additionally, he holds a Master of Arts in Educational Administration as well as having completed all coursework for a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

As an educator, Mr. Aguillon's Georgetown High School Band program was recognized on the state and national levels and appeared at the UIL State Marching Band Championships and the Music for All National Concert Band Festival. He is in frequent demand as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the state. His resume includes being on staff for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps from Casper, Wyoming and his current position as Corps Director for Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps from Austin, Texas. Mr. Aguillon has served on the faculties of Texas State University-San Marcos and Southwestern University, teaching in the field of the marching arts.

Mr. Aguillon and his wife, Vanessa, also an educator, have two sons: Noah, a graduate of Texas Lutheran University with a major in music, and Brandon, a music performance major at SMU.

Tommy Tucker, Assistant Director

Tommy Tucker is the Assistant Director of the Mustang Band, having served in that capacity and as primary music arranger since 1996. He obtained his degree from SMU in 1984 and previously served as the Mustang Band Assistant Director from 1984-1988. He has also been the musical producer/arranger for all but one Pigskin Revue since 1981.

Tommy has been arranging music for bands since 1971, and has worked with many high schools, junior colleges, universities, churches, and professional groups. His music has been featured at the Mirage Bowl in Tokyo, Japan, the St. Patrick's Week Activities in Dublin, Ireland, and at the International Celebration of Liberation in Normandy, France.. His arrangements also have been performed at the Texas UIL Marching Championships, various college bowl games, two Super Bowls, and venues from McFarlin Auditorium to the Meyerson Symphony Center to Madison Square Garden. His works have been recorded by many groups including the Dallas Cowboys Band, the Lovers Lane Jazz Band and the Light Crust Doughboys.

In addition to his writing, Tommy continues to be an active performer on piano, organ, and keyboards for local churches and other groups.

Jon Lee, Drumline Instructor

Jon Lee is the drumline instructor and percussion arranger for the Mustang Band and has been since 1995. Under his direction, the SMU Mustang Band Drumline was the featured clinic group at the 1996 Percussive Arts Society Texas Day of Percussion. Additionally, Jon is the Assistant Conductor of the Meadows Percussion Ensemble and teaches Percussion Techniques in the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU.

Jon graduated with a Masters of Music Degree in Percussion Performance from the Meadows School of the Arts. He received a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of North Texas, and has been accepted into the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of North Texas.

Jon is an active performer, educator, clinician, and adjudicator. He was a member of three P.A.S.I.C. national collegiate champion drumlines and was a member of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. He has performed with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra, Garland/Los Colinas Symphony Orchestra, Texas Wind Symphony, and Dallas Wind Symphony.
